I added a Good for you Glossary (GFYG) to my blog because I think there are quite a few ingredients that I incorporate into my lifestyle that are worth mentioning. Being a Biology major, I like to know WHY something is good for me and the benefits I get by consuming it.

Peppermint.

What It Is

Peppermint is a hybrid mint—a cross of spearmint and wintergreen—and can be consumed as a leaf, tea or oil.

What It Does

Peppermint leaves are packed with beneficial antioxidants, vitamin A and C, iron, potassium and fiber. They’re also believed to help to reduce stomach aches, relieve headaches and boost energy.

If you are feeling under the weather, inhaling diffused peppermint oil can help unclog your sinuses and soothe a scratchy throat, since its base is menthol. Drinking peppermint tea is a delicious way to aid digestion, eliminate inflammation and boost your overall immune system. The natural sedative in menthol is a stress-reliever, while the anti-inflammatory characteristics can reduce blood pressure.

Peppermint oil is a great product to hydrate dry skin. Mix it into a lip balm and body lotion. It’s also good for nourishing damaged hair.

Why I Love It

I try to always keep fresh organic mint in the house to make basic peppermint tea and also as an ingredient for feeling sick tea—one of my favorite remedies when I feel sick.
